In the Open Men Singles (played on Saturday, 3 Dec), the No. 2 seed Michal Korecky, defeated 3rd seed Tim Williams in an exciting close-fought battle. Then, the No. 1 seed Chris Gillies took out another Collaroy young gun Kona Derrick in an amazing high-standard semi-final clash. Therefore, a not to be missed Finals Day is coming up on Saturday afternoon (10 Dec) with a replay of last year’s brilliant final on the cards. Six-time former champion Michal versus last year’s champion, Chris. The talented junior boys singles, wonderful ladies singles, ladies doubles, mixed doubles and plate (ladies and men singles) finals will also be scheduled. A magnificent lineup not to be missed!
We also saw the opening rounds for the Junior Boys, with little Kenny Jr taking on the young favourite and future star Aiden. Aiden proved too strong in the end winning 8-2, but Kenny Jr put in one of his best-ever performances in front of a huge Collaroy crowd with the two stunning Anna’s providing extra glamour, taking the fully-catered corporate box front row seats. Both players lifted under the spotlight (and pressure) of the large number of spectators, which shows their immense maturity at such a young age – Amazing!
On Sunday (4 Dec), was the continuation of the Collaroy juniors on another sparkling Summer’s day. Perfect for some great tennis. We saw three wonderful matches. Nick opened up with a non-stop winner feast, ending up 8-5 over a galant Sava. Sava then won his second match 8-0 over Sam in a high-standard match containing many long rallies and great winners, which were not reflected in the score. Nick then took the final match 8-0 over Sam who again showed his amazing talent despite not playing regularly in recent months.
Fantastic level of tennis, but more importantly, played in the best sportsmanship possible, with zero disputed calls and genuine congratulations and etiquette given out by all juniors. Well done to all. I must say, the 2022 Club of the Year is in superb hands when we see this level of tennis from our young generation!
