Collaroy Tennis Club Championships - Singles

The Open Singles Men’s, Ladies and the Masters all got underway on 11th November and are now at semi-finals stage. This year’s Open Men’s Singles in particular has 32 players in the draw, making it the most number of players in this singles event for the Club, so far.

There were some fantastic early round matches. Brendan V, Chris E, Geoff A, Jake I, Shane G, Tim W and Vaclav F all made it through first round matches safely, to name a few. Peter M also put up a great fight taking an early lead against former champion Michal K, with Michal proving too strong in the end. As expected, the defending Champion Chris G breezed through his first two rounds.

Kenny M also put in a huge effort against another highly seeded and one of the big favourites, Jan L, with Jan eventually taking the match (8-4). The good news is Kenny is through to the Plate quarters after taking out the other first round lucky loser match against Bernie T. Kenny is trying to emulate Stuart S great lucky loser 2022 run, who took out the Plate title last year. Speaking of Stuart S, he met Brendan J in the second round after their respective easy first round wins. Stuart played a great match with some long top spin rallies, however, the experience of Brendan came through in the end in a tight hard-fought (8-4) victory.

Other second round matches late Saturday included a mighty tight tie break win to Jan L over Vaclav F on court 3 of the highest quality, and Jake I over Brendan V in another close fought tie break win, after finishing 7 all in games! It was also great to see other young players in the Open Singles like Aiden N, Jordan W, Mattis W, Milan M and Vanessa H-R. They all had first round wins.

The inaugural and exciting Masters Men’s singles also got under way with notable wins by Glenn R over the consistent Warren B (8-5) and Konrad H who had a remarkable (8-2) victory over the regular Wednesday night social playing and, dare I say much younger, stalwart Ed B to make it through to the next round.

Saturday afternoon also saw the start of the Ladies Singles with the centre court showdown of Eri F and Cathy H one of the highlights, with Eri eventually coming out on top 8-3. Special mention must also go to Valerie E and Karen W who competed hard in going down in first round entertaining matches against Cathy H and Lee S respectively.

Sunday continued with further exiting play with the very young Master’s entrant Damian G, taking out Peter G (8-4) and Rob T overcoming Konrad H, ending his gallant run in this new 60 and over format!

Who will get through to the next round? Who will take the 2023 title? Time will tell.
