A little bit of Roland-Garros comes to Collaroy

On a sunny Saturday, 8 June 2024, there was un petit peu of Paris in the air at Collaroy Tennis Club. Almost 50 players signed up to participate in separate groups across all six courts at our French Open Grand Slam event.

The tennis was incroyable, with a winner and runner up acknowledged on every court. The toughest tussle was on Court 3, where none other than Carmen took out top spot, just edging out the colourful Garry (looking resplendent in his sparkling bleu, blanc et rouge).

Most players came adorned in French-flavoured costumes, with Anna G. taking out best dressed in an outfit that featured faux fur and fishnet stockings, while Kimberly was a close runner up.

Chef de Mission, Lynne and her hardworking team (including ‘The Cocktail Queens’ Anna C. et Michela), prepared croissants, pastries and some fabulous French gâteaux, paired with delectable drinks for us to savour throughout the afternoon.

Prizes were presented in a glittering ceremony, which saw a host of our model members sashaying down an imaginary catwalk to thunderous applause from the crowd. Club President Vito and Captain Wil then presented the nominees for 2023 Club Person of the Year, before previous winner Gareth handed the 2023 trophy to Dave K. as his successor.

All in all it was a magnifique afternoon, with more than one member commenting on the camaraderie within the club, exemplified by such an event. “You just don’t get this feeling at other clubs”, said Simone (as she slowly sipped another cocktail).

And now it’s on to our 3rd Grand Slam event for the year… our all-white Wimbledon Day on Saturday July 13! Scones, strawberries and cream and PIMMs and Lemonade will be the order of the day.
