GRAND SLAM GRANDEUR
Never a club to let the opportunity for a party pass us by, club stalwarts Lynne and Ros decided we should celebrate the grandeur of the Grand Slam tournaments with events of our own.
So they gathered together a team of helpers and on the afternoon of Saturday June 10, the Club turned bleu, blanc et rouge to celebrate the French Open. The Tricolore French Flag flew proudly from the court fences, members dressed in their best French stylings and we supped on baguettes and plateaux de fromage , while sipping the odd glass of vin.
There was some fantastique tennis played too, with sets allocated and partners swapping after four games (very French!). At the end of the day, prizes were allocated for most games won with Anna C. and Kim sharing the title in the Ladies category and Dave K. winning the men’s.
But the main prizes went to our best dressed on the day… the inimitable Val in blonde pigtails, long socks and French national colours and Warren scoring by simply painting a ‘feeelthy’ French pencil moustache on his upper lip. (Simple but effective Warren!) Thanks Ros and Lynne for a fun day as Roland Garros came to Collaroy.
WIMBLEDON WHITES
Then just 4 weeks later, on Saturday July 8, it was time to go all PIMM’s and Proper and celebrate the grandest Grand Slam of all… Wimbledon!
This time, the attire was, of course, all white and we were treated to an afternoon tea of scones with jam and cream, strawberries and cream and Pimm’s and Lemonade.
