Collaroy member Albin Kurti has been selected in the Australian Team to contest the World Tennis Masters Team Championships in the 50+ category. The event starts later this week and will be held from July 5-10 on red clay courts across four venues in Rome, Italy. Tournament HQ will be the Oasi di Pace Club, located among the greenery of the Appia Antica Archaeological Park.
This is a big deal. The tournament is the Masters equivalent of the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup competitions, with top players from around the world representing their countries in the 50 and 55-and-over age groups. The event will host a total of 90 teams from 34 nations across the globe competing in Rome to become World Champions.
The Australian Mens 50's Team comprises Albin Kurti (ITF Singles 50+ Ranking – 20), Justin James (ITF Singles 50+ Ranking - 29), Richard Dodson (ITF Singles 50+ Ranking - 48) and Morgan Young (ITF Singles 50+ Ranking - 81). Reserve is Craig Jervis.
The ITF states that it aims “… to build on its long-term vision to make Masters Tennis the world’s leading sport for tournament participation among those aged 30 and above.” According to the organisation, “the ITF World Tennis Masters Tour offers competitive playing opportunities for amateur players from the age of 30 through to 90+, with more than 70 nations hosting tournaments.”
The Oasi di Pace Club has designed a parallel program for players, families and friends, which will run during the World Masters Championships. ‘Tennis & Dolce Vita’ will enable participants to fully immerse themselves in Roman and Italian culture. It combines UNESCO-listed tours (Appian Way & Rome), authentic Italian food and wine experiences and sport and wellness activities. (Don’t do it too tough Albin!)
Congratulations to Collaroy Tennis Club's latest national rep. player. Go Aussie!
