Guiding Principles 100 YEAR CELEBRATION In 2022, Collaroy Tennis Club celebrated its Centenary – 100 years of providing tennis to the local community. It was an opportunity to look back and be proud of how far we’ve come and to share stories and engage with those who have helped shape the Club – past and present members, volunteers and the wider community. And while we reflected upon and celebrated our past, we now look towards the future, as we continue to cement our place as the best tennis club on the Northern Beaches and beyond. Our Centenary was celebrated with a Commemorative event attended by local dignitaries and a big Community Open Day called Racquets at the Reef that attracted hundreds of locals, celebrities and top level players. We conducted a raffle raising funds to upgrade facilities, along with a 100 Year Anniversary Party for past and current members and supporting partners. Photos and Events

Story and Photos HERE COMES THE SUN 7 May 2022, Saturday 4pm An official ceremony at which Club Sponsor, Belle Property, ‘turned on’ the Solar Panels and solar batteries that have made us the first fully sustainable tennis club on the Northern Beaches and one of the only such clubs in all of New South Wales. Story and Photos A Timeline of our Club's History Having been proclaimed as a Crown Reserve on 20 May, 1914, Griffith Park (named in honour of then Minister of Works, Arthur Griffith who secured the land for the public), was acknowledged by Warringah Shire Council as “A significant area offering an outstanding range of scenic, natural, environmental, social, heritage, educational and recreational assets.” The Council proposed setting aside a section of the park for “… laying out a cricket oval, football ground and enclosures for tennis and lawn bowls”. 1921 Council approval for recreational tennis at Griffith Park Shire President, Cr Arthur George Parr, confirmed that Council had given approval for a section of Griffith Park near Anzac Avenue be set aside for recreational tennis and construction commenced on two ‘sand’ / loam courts. A year later, the first (white) ball was struck on Centre Court by the newly elected first Club President, William Alexander Makim. 1922 First play at Collaroy Tennis Club In the same year that King George V opened the new Centre Court at Wimbledon, play is first held on the two newly built loam courts of Collaroy Tennis Club. Membership was opened and a Committee elected with W.A. Makim as our first President. An old shed situated behind Court 2 served as our first clubhouse. 1932 Tennis continued its popularity even during The Great Depression The world was still in the grasp of The Great Depression, but the feats of Aussie tennis players including Jack Crawford (pic.), Harry Hopman, Vivian McGrath and rising stars Adrian Quist and Nancye Wynne Bolton helped ward off any slump in the sport’s popularity… and Collaroy Tennis Club continued to thrive and grow its membership. 1942 The Club survived World War II On the night of May 31, one of three Japanese midget submarines entered Sydney Harbour following a Manly Ferry through the established boom defences. Having sunk the HMAS Kuttabul by mistake, that sub was damaged as it escaped the Harbour and headed north. It snuck right past our club off Long Reef Headland, making it to Bungan Head near Newport before sinking. A week later, a larger submarine returned to bombard Sydney with its deck guns from open water. Though close to the action (and an obvious target) Collaroy Tennis Club survived its brush with World War II. A year earlier, Joan Gilroy and Ernie Ode who’d met at CTC, were married and started a family with daughter Ros still playing at the Club today. 1952 Construction of a 3rd court and larger Clubhouse and first teams entered in Sydney Badge Frank Sedgman was tearing up world tennis and 17 year old Ken Rosewall was just a year away from becoming the youngest player to ever win the Australian title (a feat which stands to this day). Elizabeth II was crowned Queen and ‘The Petith Dynasty’ at Collaroy Tennis Club had its beginnings as Greg was born, to be followed just two years later by Mark. (Tennis would never be the same again.) Construction commenced on a 3rd court and a larger clubhouse, and Collaroy Tennis Club entered its first teams in the Sydney Badge Competition run by Tennis NSW. 1962 The Club’s 40th Anniversary Soviet missile bases were discovered in Cuba, John Glenn became the first astronaut to orbit the Earth and Rod Laver won the first of his two Calendar Grand Slams. A party was held to mark our 40th anniversary at which members grooved along to a song called ‘Love Me Do’ – the debut single of a new young band from Liverpool, England. Just one year later, Life Member Bob Silversides joined Collaroy at the age of 15… and he’s held near-continuous membership ever since! Congratulations Bob. 1972 The Club’s 50th Anniversary and 100 member milestone The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) was founded and Ken Rosewall won his fourth Australian Championship to now become both the youngest and the oldest player to do so. More importantly, members of Collaroy Tennis Club celebrated the Club’s 50th anniversary! Over the ensuing decade, the Club almost doubled its membership to around 100. 1973 Current President joins the Club Our Centenary President, Vito Cincinnato (seen here far right of photo with wife Megan) joined the Club and has been a stalwart ever since. 1979 Tennis at Collaroy Tennis Club circa 1979 Sony released the Walkman, The Knack topped the charts with 'My Sharona', 'Trivial Pursuit' was launched and tennis at Collaroy continued unabated, though the old clubhouse was on its last legs. 1979 The old Clubhouse circa 1979 The old clubhouse was temporarily replaced with a shed before a new clubhouse was built some 9 years later. 1982 A Thriller year for the Club! A massive year for the Club. While Martina Navratilova won the first of her three Australian singles crowns and Michael Jackson released ‘Thriller’, our members were themselves thrilled that: o Council extended our Lease for a further 20 years o Work commenced on the construction of three new courts with the surface of all courts transitioning to synthetic grass o New lighting would be installed on all courts o The design of a brand new clubhouse was approved, with local player Arthur Gartrell appointed as Architect. o And Collaroy Tennis Club fielded more teams in district competitions than any other club in the MWTA. We had up to 17 teams competing and had to hire outside courts to accommodate them. 1982 Michael Peters, Bob Paterson and Carol Coram sign Deed of Trust Including State Government assistance from the Department of Sport and Recreation, the cost for the complete upgrade of our Club was in excess of $300,000. Committee Members Michael Peters, Bob Paterson and Carol Coram resigned from the committee in order to become Trustees, guaranteeing a loan from the Bank of New South Wales to cover the work. The Deed of Trust was duly signed on February 28. 1982 Members digging in to build our new Club Members volunteered their labour to prepare the base of the new courts and help install the light poles and the new 6-court complex was opened for play on June 2, 1982. However local residents lodged a complaint with the Land & Environment Court causing construction of the new clubhouse to be delayed for six years! In the meantime, members were forced to make do with an Atco shed as their temporary clubhouse. 1983 The ATCO shed as temporary clubhouse Court Hire fees to members of the public were increased by $1 per hour, to help cover the unexpected costs incurred by the delay to construction of the clubhouse and associated ongoing maintenance costs. Around that same time the MWTA (now Tennis Northern Beaches) introduced Night Competitions for the first time. Collaroy fielded one of the first teams in the Wednesday Night Men’s Comp., consisting of Mark and Greg Petith, John Kelly, Dave Vincent, Clarrie Bridges and Warren (‘Horry’) Marsden. They made the Final, playing a team destined to become their arch rivals for years – ‘The Burglars’, comprising members of Bareena Park Tennis Club (ironically captained by now Club committee member, Dave Keogh). 1988 The new clubhouse takes shape in 1988 Australia celebrated our Bicentennial on January 26, the Summer Olympics are held in Seoul, South Korea and construction starts on a brand new clubhouse at Collaroy. 1989 The new Clubhouse completed The new clubhouse opens its door in 1989. 1992 Many celebrations were held after the Clubhouse completion Bill Clinton is elected President of the U.S. and the Summer Olympics are held in Barcelona, Spain with Jennifer Capriati stunning Steffi Graf to win the Gold Medal. Three years earlier, our brand new clubhouse had been completed, seven years after plans had been lodged, and many celebrations were held within its walls in 1992. 2002 The Club hits 150 members, but needs more ladies! Brazil defeats Germany to win the FIFA World Cup and Lleyton Hewitt wins The Championships at Wimbledon, extending his ranking as world No. 1 after becoming the youngest male in the ATP era to earn top ranking at just 20 years of age. Collaroy Tennis Club hits 150 members in 1992, though still with an imbalance of men. We need more ladies! 2010 Evolve Tennis Academy appointed Coaching Partner After consultation with members, the committee made the somewhat controversial decision to move on from long-time coach Peter Cullen and appoint Evolve Tennis Academy led by Ryan Maloney and Scott Fletcher as the Club’s new Coaching Partner. It was a tough call that has paid dividends. 2021 2021 Most Outstanding Tennis Club or Venue – Metro Collaroy Tennis Club receives the prestigious award of ‘Most Outstanding Tennis Club or Venue – Metro’ from Tennis NSW. And in the same year, the club was one of 3 finalists for ‘Most Outstanding Club’ in the 2021 Australian Tennis Awards. The Membership Number applies only if your booking is made 3 days or less in advance . Booking Limit of 1 court per day and only 1 hour of play per day. If you’ve played for an hour and no-one else has booked your court, feel free to keep playing beyond the hour. But please vacate the court the moment another booker turns up. ‘Block Bookings’ among members enabling the same player/s to continue to book beyond an hour are not allowed , as this prevents other members and the general public from booking courts. In situations where a member who has already played for an hour for that day, wishes to play with a different member who has booked a court that same day, a $10 guest fee is applicable. No permanent, regular bookings are allowed If playing with non-members, the cost for each guest is $10 payable during organised Saturday/Sunday social sessions or at the Evolve Pro Shop at other times. Juniors must be accompanied by an adult at all times during play. Cancellations must be made no later than up to 12 hours before the time booked. If you can’t make your booking time, please cancel your booking ASAP to allow other members or the community the chance to book the court. You may book and pay for courts outside the allocated ‘FREE Court Hire for Members’ times, if the ‘free court times’ do not suit your schedule. We ask everyone to kindly respect these rules. Please contact Evolve at the Pro Shop or on (02) 9971 0644 if you experience any technical issues with the booking system. Thanks and enjoy your tennis!

- GUIDING PRINCIPLES | Collaroy Tennis Club
Guiding Principles One of the things Collaroy Tennis Club is most proud of is that we’re an inclusive club that welcomes diversity. It’s part of our DNA. We realise that everyone’s unique and that our differences contribute to our Club’s culture and future direction. A CLUB THAT WELCOMES ALL INCLUSION AND EQUALITY Collaroy Tennis Club has been named an 'Inclusion Development Hub' by Tennis Australia – one of only three in NSW. We have also been asked by Tennis NSW to participate in a Gender Equity Pilot Program headed by Casey Dellacqua. Our aim is to improve access and opportunities for all members to achieve gender equality at our club, both as players and administrators. TENNIS ACCESSIBILITY Our coaching partner Evolve Tennis Academy runs programs coaching players with II-1 Intellectual Disability, II-2 Down Syndrome and II-3 Autism. The club has also installed a cushion acrylic hardcourt enabling a coaching program, social play and tournaments for wheelchair players. In fact, one of our ‘Wheelies’ – Annalise Fadeev – has competed in both State and National titles and has won a Bronze Medal at the Special Olympics. The Club is committed to increasing opportunities and accessibility to tennis for people who have a physical or intellectual disability or autism. MEMBER PROTECTION AND SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN The Club has adopted Tennis Australia’s Member Protection Policy and Safeguarding Children Code of Conduct to keep the sport safe and inclusive for all. We have a zero tolerance approach to any form of child abuse, discrimination and harassment. We are committed to ensuring children and young people feel safe and protected from harm when at the Club. A Member Protection Information Officer has been trained and appointed to the Management Committee and all Committee members and coaches hold current Working With Children Checks . Should you have any concerns about conduct please contact us and/or contact Tennis Australia's Integrity and Compliance Unit (TAICU). DIVERSITY AND OPPORTUNITY Collaroy Tennis Club embraces diversity, making our club a welcoming, safe and inclusive place for everyone. We aim to reflect the make-up of our local communities and believe that everyone should have the opportunity to be included and engaged through tennis in a way that is positive and meaningful. The Club is committed to increasing opportunities and accessibility to tennis for everyone, by: Engaging with multicultural, indigenous and LGBTQIA+ communities Opening conversations with members and coaches Enhancing talent identification Providing pathway opportunities Creating playing opportunities through community events and tournaments CODE OF BEHAVIOUR Collaroy Tennis Club encourages safe, fair play and good sportsmanship at all times. Members and their guests are expected to abide by this Code. We expect that all play is conducted in a friendly, civil and socially responsible manner. Poor behaviour can lead to suspension of membership. Let's have fun and enjoy our tennis! KIND AND RESPECTFUL All play, whether social or competition, should be conducted in a spirit of fair play and good sportsmanship. Remember that children are often inside or near the Club, so member behaviour is observed by a broader audience than just other players. Bad language is not acceptable in or around the Club. All equipment, including racquets and balls, is to be treated with respect… e.g. the throwing of racquets is not acceptable. Members are to take the greatest care possible to prolong the life of all club facilities including furniture, equipment, court surfaces, nets and fences. Players involved in competitions or tournaments must also act at all times in accordance with the Tennis Australia Code of Behaviour . SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CARE Collaroy Tennis Club is committed to promoting innovative and sustainable practices required to achieve climate neutrality. We’re fully solar-powered and have state of the art, low-power consuming LED lighting on every court and our new inclusive bathroom facilities are water efficient . We are proud to follow in the footsteps of Tennis Australia - the first Australian sporting organisation to commit to the United Nations Sports for Climate Change Action Framework.
